Maserati Ghibli is looking to make its debut in Indonesia’s luxury sedan market, currently dominated by the BMW 5 series and Mercedes E-Class, starting early next year, the Maserati Indonesia chief executive Irvino Edwardly said on Thursday.
At a price range of Rp 1.5 bilion to Rp 2 billion ($150,000 to $200,000), the 404 horsepower Ghibli is a more “affordable” car for wealthy Indonesians, Irvino said.
The current Maserati models sold in Indonesia are the Quattroporte and GranTurismo, starting at Rp 2 billion.
“It’s not really hard selling luxury cars here. There’s a big market and we’re planning to tap that market by introducing the more affordable Ghibli in the first quarter next year,” he said, at breaking the fast in Jakarta.
The Ghibli is at the forefront of Maserati’s global goal to reach 50,000 sales per year by 2015. As of 2013, the Italian carmaker sold 6,300 units per year.
The Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo) estimates the premium car market in Indonesia at around 10,000 units being sold per year.
The premium car market indicates a car with a price tag at Rp 500 million, such as the BMW 3 series, Mercedes C-Class and Audi A4.
In Indonesia alone, Irvino said that Maserati Indonesia, which was established last year, had sold 10 cars as of the first half of this year. The company aims to sell 20 cars this year.
“With the introduction of the Ghibli next year, we could reach 40 units per year,” he said.
The first-generation Ghibli was introduced in 1966. The 2013 models is the third-generation Ghibli, and it comes in three types, the S version, the diesel version, and the S Q4.
The S version is equipped with a 2.979cc twin turbo V6 engine able to produce 410 horsepower. The diesel has a 3,000cc turbo V6 that produces 271 horsepower. The Maserati Ghibli S Q4 has a 3000cc V6 twin turbo that can produce 410 horsepower.
The Ghibli S Q4 accelerates from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 4.8 seconds, while its top speed is 284 kilometers per hour. Meanwhile the Ghibli S accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5 seconds, with a top speed of 285 km/h. The Ghibli Diesel surge from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and can reach a top speed of 250 kmh.
Maserati is also planning to fit a 3800cc twin turbo V8 from Quattroporte GTS into a Ghibli model.
