The Jakarta Anti-Corruption Court sentenced notorious former lawmaker Wa Ode Nurhayati to six years in jail on Thursday over a corruption case surrounding a lucrative regional development program.
The panel of judges, presided over by Suhartoyo, also ordered Wa Ode to pay Rp 500 million ($51,800) in fines, or spend an extra six months in jail.
The sentence is lower than the 14 years in jail and Rp 1 billion in fines sought by prosecutors, who charged her with bribery and money laundering.
Wa Ode is a former National Mandate Party (PAN) lawmaker and a former member of the House of Representatives’ Budget Committee.
She was proven guilty of receiving Rp 6.2 billion in bribes from businessman Andi Haris Surahman to get three districts in Aceh included in the Regional Infrastructure Adjustment Fund (DPID) program while she still served at the budget committee, and was also proven guilty of Rp 50.5 billion worth of money laundering.
“[We hereby] declare that the defendant, Wa Ode, is proven [lawfully] guilty of a corruption crime,” Suhartoyosaid as he read out the verdict on Thursday evening.
